System for spatial resource inventory and planning in water & sewage companies

WK.GIS is a Smallworld-based system designed for spatial resource inventory and planning in water&sewage companies. Objects of water&sewage plumbing and characteristic features of these objects can be presented faithfully in the geographical database of the system. WK.GIS can be integrated with additional computer units such as: network management unit (SCADA), customer service unit, billing and financial unit, management information unit.

Network Inventory and Analysis

WK.GIS comprises an extensive menu of objects. Most of these objects have its own graphical presentation on the map (for instance: pipes, manholes, hydrants, bolts, buildings). Objects are grouped according to the type of the pipes (water or sewage). There is also a group of objects which are not directly related to the plumbing (for instance: plot, building, address number). Thanks to this division of objects the application supports three different data entries: only water plumbing, only sewage plumbing, water and sewage plumbing. The data model and the structure of the system can be adjusted to any client’s demands.

Facing a very demanding market, water&sewage companies are still looking for ways to make their service more competitive. Building a computer system, which provides thorough knowledge of the technical condition of the plumbing, gives an opportunity of significant money savings. The following business advantages result from applying the system in a company:

Water Network
  • A full record of the plumbing infrastructure (water pipes, house connections, customers, water meters, sewage pipes and the manholes etc.).
  • Arranging the technical documentation (plans, sketches etc.), easy management of the technical documentation.
  • Registration of breakdowns, water supply breakages and faults reported by customers.
  • Planning of repairs and modernisation of the plumbing.
  • Support for “technical conditions of house connection making” issue
  • Support for the office of customer service – full information concerning the way of the plumbing and water supply value for particular customers, easy localisation of the plumbing elements (for instance – the nearest hydrant for the fire brigade).

A number of functional modules, described below, are available for the WK.GIS platform.

Outage Management Support

The module helps organize engineering and business activities around a network outage:

  • disconnecting the affected area with the closest working valves that have to be closed,
  • generating cut-off notices for all the disconnected customers,
  • estimating the amount of water not supplied to customers,
  • calculating time needed to refill the disconnected part of the network.

A number of predefined statistical reports have been defined for this module to help organize prevention activities. The system will tell, for example, what is the most faulty valve type or indicate area with frequent and dense outages.

Main Module WK.GIS

Engineering Computations

The module is capable of performing complex hydraulic computations of the network.

The computation process results in: water pressure at each node of the network, carrier flow time from to each node of the network, pressure drop for each line segment. The results are presented in a form of predefined queries and reports, as well as diagrams for a selected path.

The Engineering Computations module is a powerful tool for network engineers responsible for network control and regulation, either in real-life operation or simulation mode.

Investment Planning

The module makes it possible to plan investment activities in details, such as network extension or reconstruction, and new customer connections. A number of reports can be then generated, including bill of materials, estimated cost of the investment in time, cost schedule, as well as simple ROI analysis which takes account of the investment cost, operations cost and water sale schedule.

Network Operations Support

This module supports network maintenance activities such as:

  • fault reporting and management,
  • technical inspections of the network constructions and devices,
  • estimation of the technical state of the network, which is input to the repair and investment decision making process,
  • maintenance work orders.
